Richard Whelan, a recently retired senior partner in an international financial services company, is a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies and the Belgian Royal Institute for International Relations.

He has studied international politics and strategic studies independently for over 30 years. He has carried out extensive private research during that period focusing on terrorism, WMD, the nuclear balance, and non-proliferation, the conflict in the Middle East, strategic developments in the USSR and Russia, the people’s Republic of China and Taiwan, the first Gulf War, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and related topics almost all of which has been drawn upon in researching and writing “Al-Qaedaism The Threat to Islam The Threat to the World”.

The purpose of all this research was simply to understand conflict in the broader sense, why it was occurring, and propose possible solutions to it. He adopts a completely independent approach in determining appropriate policy responses having considered independent and other expert views available.
